Marco’s Driving School: Randburg etc.

Received from a member of the public:

I used Marco’s K53 driving school to book my learner’s on the 10th August 2017 at 5:15am, Johanna asked me to fill out the registration forms in the car signed and gave it back to her. To date I have not received a copy of it, they claim this is the contract, it was a contract that was signed prior to me writing or getting my learners I did receive a receipt for the booking of the learners R750 and the “study material” I received was 3 exams papers and nothing else.

I wrote my learner’s on the 13 September and passed with very little help from them actually no help no tutor was provided. I booked my lessons thereafter and only used 2 out of the 10 I paid for R1950, to date I haven’t received my receipt which was done via eft.

Lesson 1 and 2 was with Johanna:

She picked me up from my home and I was told to drive, she didn’t show me anything with regards to gears, clutch, mirrors, seatbelt and indicators or any do’ s and don’ts.  When I asked her she said this is the way they teach. I was unnerved and was stressed, she paid little attention to me while she used her phone on WhatsApp. Every time I felt I made a mistake I said sorry and I felt I needed to apologise to her and I could sense her frustration when she would grab the steering wheel she a little soft skills with regards to teaching. I honestly feel I needed pre lessons to my lessons with her.  The exact same type of lesson happened the next day.  I felt some much an uneasiness thinking about my lesson’s, when I asked for a new instructor they were closing for the year in December and said she’s the only female instructor.

I had a balance of 8 already paid lessons to use, when I made contact with the owner again today 13/02 to find out if I could get another instructor he said it had expired. I looked at his website and the packages don’t have an expiry date nor did it state this on his marketing material in the terms and conditions. He referred me back to the “contract” I signed during the very first time I met them which I signed without me even having my learners this document should have the date of 10 August which will clearly show that I only received my learners on the 13 September and I didn’t sign any contract during my first lesson if they ever had the decency to give me a copy of the contract on the first meeting than it means they had a photocopier in the car? And if they gave me a copy or stated it clearly I would have forced the issue with my lessons and got it done but they made no contact.

When I asked him back for my money for services that were never rendered. He made it clear that he wasn’t going to honour the 10 lesson plan and give my money back. He was quite rude, when I pointed out how unnerving my 2 lessons was with Johanna and she put me straight onto the road without any information or pre guidance and that I had to take 5 calmettes to go on my next lesson he said well that’s how we do it we don’t have the time to take you to a “big field” to teach you. He went on and on shouting at me and didn’t give me a chance to speak when I called him, he said he is the best and he has been doing this for 8 years and this is the way it is , I asked again for my money he refused.  Before slamming the phone down and blocking me on whatsapp He said in a very direct threatening voice, guess what I know where you live. When I tried calling back he doesn’t take my calls, my husband tried calling him but he won’t answer.

Originally I found his details on IDRIVE, “find quality driving school’s” – I sadly believed this line because I assumed this businesses where vetted before that are deemed as quality.

I’ve answer some of the questions from the arrive alive website:

What would I advise people to look out for in a good instructor? – If you want to select a safe driving instructor, you need to consider a few things:

  1. Does the instructor you are considering going to have an instructor’s certificate?

This was not presented

  1. Does the driving school vehicle have a dual control brake? While it is not compulsory, good instructors do go to the expense of fitting dual controls for your safety.

  1. Is it sign-marked?

  1. Is the instructor prepared to put the terms and conditions of his or her driving school in writing for you?

No, if I knew I would of never signed up with them or knew what I was getting into.

  1. Is he/ she prepared to offer you a receipt for any money you pay? If not don’t even consider paying them your hard-earned cash! We get reports constantly of people who have been defrauded by unscrupulous “Instructors.”

No, I didn’t receive a receipt for monies paid for my driving lessons nor an agreement/contract to date

  1. When the instructor drives, do you feel safe? Does he/she obey the law? Is the vehicle clean and roadworthy and in a generally good condition?

She didn’t drive while I was in the car, No, she made use of her cell phone while teaching me. Yes car seemed road worthy, hand break was hard to lift she also complained about it and she was lifting it for me.

  1. Is he or she polite and clean and respectful?

She seemed so.

  1. Is the instructor honest and reliable? Does he / she refer to the official K53 manual? Does he or she offer you a copy of the K53 manual?

They never offered me the K53 manual. They were never honest with their own polices and withheld information to their own benefit.

Below is details directly from his website, I’ve been through it and it doesn’t show and expiry date to his prices nor terms and conditions.
